Almeria Airport was inaugurated on 6th February 1968 at the point along the bay of Almeria that has become known as El Alquián.
The airport has been a major contributory factor in the continuing rise of tourism within the beautiful province, nestled between Granada and Murcia, on the southeastern tip of Spain.
Over half a million passengers a year discover the excellent connections available from Almería Airport to popular destinations throughout the region, including Cabo de Gata, Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido and Mojácar. The airport is the first point of arrival for the vast majority of visitors to Almeria. It is situated in a prime location, 9km from the capital city and a mere 500 metres from the Mediterranean coast.
This is the third most important Andalusian airport along with Málaga and Seville, handling a large number of daily, direct flights to and from all the major Spanish and European cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona, London and Paris. The airport consists of a 3,200 metre long runway with two exit paths and a partial taxiway parallel to the flight runways, a landing apron measuring 360 by 150 metres and a terminal building with the capacity to handle 600 passengers during the rush hour. Combined plans are in place to extend and refurbish the terminal building and landing apron to meet the predicted transport demands of the next decade, whilst limiting any impact this may have on the local environment.
At present this modern airport offers passengers a fine selection of facilities and amenities including a duty free shop, gift shop and newsagents, three excellent cafes and bars, and a range of reliable banking services. Frequent bus and taxi connections to Almeria city centre are available from the bus and taxi stops conveniently situated outside of Arrivals. Buses are the cheapest option with a single ticket to the city centre costing 0.70 euros. The weekday service runs regularly every 30 minutes between 7:22am and 03:22pm, and every 45 minutes between 04:07pm and 10:08pm.
The weekend service leaves the terminal every 45 minutes between 07:00am and 23:03pm. Alternatively, taxis provides a direct route, but are slightly more expensive with a fare to Almeria averaging 15 euros, to Aguadulce this is 18.63 euros, Cabo de Gata is 23 euros, El Ejido is 37.48 euros, Roquetas de Mar is 25.94 euros and an average taxi fare to Mojácar is 70.78 euros.
